Probably the most confusing of the bunch is Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. which at its simplest, operates Norwegian Cruise Line (its standard line), Oceania Cruises (its upscale line) and Regent Seven Seas Cruises (its luxury line). As president of Carnival, which turned 50 in 2022 and welcomed its 100 millionth guest in 2023, Duffy heads a team of more than 48,000 employees, including operations in Australia, where three P&O Cruises Australia are under her wing. Since taking the helm as president, Duffy has been instrumental in guiding Carnival Cruise Line through periods of significant growth and recovery, particularly following COVID-19’s impact on the travel industry. That said, the remote possibility that something else as unexpected and damaging to the company as the COVID-19 pandemic could happen is one reason Carnival Corporation's leaders want to restore the company's balance sheet as soon as they can. TPG ended its conversation with Weinstein with a broad question about how the pandemic has changed the way he and the rest of the leadership team at Carnival Corporation think about long-term planning. Investors on Wall Street are clearly worried about the company's future, as can be seen in the 58% plunge in the company's stock price this year.

Cunard Line Ltd.

This cruise line received its humble beginnings in 1972 with a brief co-ownership between Meshulam Riklis and Ted Arison. However, due to mounting debt, Riklis sold his shares to Arison, who continued with this venture. During Carnival Cruise Line’s extensive 50 years in business, it has had five presidents.

From 1993 to 2007, the company was led by Robert H. Dickinson, who further expanded the line by strengthening existing relationships with other travel partners. He was responsible for the Carnival Spirit, Fantasy, Destiny, and Conquest ships. Ted’s son, Micky, took over the company and ran it from 1981 to 1993. He expanded the company, becoming chairman of Carnival Corporation in 1993.

Even after several new ship additions in the past two years (ships that already were in the pipeline), it's down to just 92 vessels. The two class' namesake ships ,300-ton Carnival Splendor and 130,000-ton Carnival Dream -- entered the fleet in 2008 and 2009, respectively. While there wasn't another Splendor-class ship built, Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze launched to complete the small, three-ship Dream class in 2011 and 2012.

In recognition of her contributions to the cruise industry, Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, was honored with the Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) Lifetime Achievement Award for 2024. The prestigious accolade was presented to Duffy during the CLIA Hall of Fame Cruise Industry Awards ceremony on April 18, where she was also inducted into the CLIA Hall of Fame. "Our ability to, over time, rebuild the balance sheet, get back to that fortress [balance sheet], that's the path that we want to get on," he says. "I think we can do that in a way that still allows us to grow and to order more ships over time. I don't look at them as mutually exclusive. But we absolutely have a priority that we're going to use our cash to ... reduce financial leverage." While "a lot of our guests love the new ships," some of the highest ratings Carnival Corporation brands get from customers is from sailing on older ships, he says.

There are so many brands these days, it can be difficult to keep track of which ones are part of the same family. You might even be surprised to discover that budget-friendly lines and super-pricey luxury lines share the same parent companies. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. Today, AIDA operates more than a dozen cruise ships, with AIDAcosma being the most recent.

The stock is now trading below $10 a share, down nearly 90% from highs set four years ago and significantly below the level where it was trading when Donald took over as CEO nine years ago. As a result, Carnival Corporation has continued to lose massive amounts of money in recent quarters — $1.83 billion in just the three months ending May 31, a magnitude of quarterly loss that once was unthinkable for the company. "Each [of the brands] have their own ethos, their own way of creating that happiness," Weinstein says. "I think the more focused each brand can be in clarity around what its proposition is, the better we'll be."

Leisure travel was all that remained and Carnival Corporation came in and scooped up the line in 1989. As a result, the line appeals to a variety of passengers of all ages, including couples hoping to share a romantic vacation. The Carnival parent company took over a majority stake in Cunard in 1998, but the brand's history began in 1840, when a Canadian war veteran established a fleet of steam-powered ferries and, later, ocean liners.

Viking, formerly Viking Cruises, is owned by Norwegian billionaire Torstein Hagen. The cruise line has three divisions, Viking River Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises, and Viking Expeditions. The subsidiary was created in 1996 as Magical Cruise Company Limited. They merged with Carnival on April 17, 2003, in a deal worth US$5.4 billion. Despite its size, the brand operates three popular lines; Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas. Jason Leppert - Senior Writer, Cruises and Cruise Travel - is a San Diego-based cruising expert with more than 100 sailings...

Four of the brands, including Holland America and Costa, do not have a single ship on order. "I will say that our order book is set for the next few years ... [If] everything works out the way we hope, we'll have the opportunity to pay down debt in a meaningful way [in the coming years]," he says. "That doesn't preclude us from doing what we think is appropriate in the growth profile ... [But] we'd be looking at ships [scheduled to arrive] in four, five, six, seven years down the line." When asked whether ship orders could soon resume, Weinstein is noncommittal. He notes that the company is determined to get its debt level down and rebuild the "fortress balance sheet" that it once had. To do that, the company will have to divert a significant chunk of any profits it generates in the coming years to paying down debt, not buying more ships.

By the 1960s, the Italy-based company was Europe's largest cruise line. Costa was jointly acquired in 1997 by Carnival and Airtours, each of the two companies purchasing a respective 50% stake. Three years later, Carnival purchased the remaining stake in Costa from Airtours for approximately $515 million.

Around 50% of cruise passengers sail with a Carnival-owned each year. And the company’s namesake, Carnival Cruise Line, is the largest cruise line in the world by passenger volume. Duffy, who has been at the helm of Carnival Cruise Line since 2015, oversees one of the world’s biggest cruise lines and its operations across a fleet of 27 ships.

By the time that Carnival purchased 50% of the line, in 1997, Costa was the leading cruise line in Europe. Seabourn is another cruise line that was one of the first that Carnival Corporation purchased after going public. However, unlike Holland America Line, Seabourn doesn’t boast hardly as long a history. Instead, Seabourn was founded only a few years before Carnival’s acquisition, as the first Seabourn ship entered service in 1988. Of course, like many lines during the two World Wars, Holland America Line pitched in to transport military personnel throughout the 1930s and 1940s. However, as transatlantic air travel became more popular, Holland America Line ceased its transportation services and focused on its cargo shipping, until that aspect of the business was sold in the 1970s.

Seabourn also began offering expedition sailings with a couple of vessels that were built specifically for cruises to rugged, far-flung and less-traveled destinations that include the Arctic and the Galapagos. P&O Australia was acquired by Carnival in 2003, and it remains the only cruise line in the world that caters entirely to Australian passengers who enjoy fun-in-the-sun cruises. Carnival Corp. took full ownership of Italian line Costa Cruises in 2000 after originally obtaining just 50% in 1997.
